Why do you see so many barn doors, old and new, with the design feature of an”X” or two? Or Three? Or Four?
Is it possibly a target for the paper boy to hit? A deterrent for unwanted visitors? (X Do Not EnterX) Or maybe its a way of showing off wealth? (“Here lay the treasure”) Realistically its probably all of those with a little bit of some other reason. Either way, it looks good.

The “X” although in modern times is primarily used in the construction of the door for aesthetics, originates from simple ancient engineering. With the boards running from corner to corner of the door, strength is gained to prevent warping and bowing. Im sure you can think of a better (more entertaining) reason though.
